Operating Document For My Ideal Worker’s Co-operative
Equal-parts operating document and a set of aspirational ideals, I composed this 26-page document in a fit of manic energy spurred on by my conviction that there could be a better, more scaleable structure for tech workers’ co-operatives to allow them to break the typical limit of ~10 worker-owners by leveraging representative democracy. The result was the following, which unfortunately never entered into practice, as I never gained a second worker-owner to speak of. (The people I was interested in recruiting had very real material concerns – they were not exactly in the mood to gamble on a start-up when they were steeped in student debt!) It’s my hope that some organization at least tries something similar to the operating principles that I have laid out in this document – heck, I’m curious to see if it would work, because this is what I would view as the ideal work environment.
